Adukeh’s poems, like pearls, are drawn from deep places. This is a brave and beautiful book you will want to return to again and again not just for its fine craftsmanship but its message of hope and healing.

I feel privileged to read the poetic journey of grief, mourning, healing and hope that Adukeh the poet depicts and shares. She leaves no tear unturned and there is always a sense of grace and promise in her words. The poem that struck me the hardest was “ What it felt like when he made me a cup of tea” This poem evoked the person Adukeh mourns but his life too. The people who would enjoy this work are ones who can savour words, wait patiently and sit quietly. Not afraid to go “there” wherever there is. Go deep and find peace.

A punchy, layered and considered look on sadness. Adukeh the poet’s approach is empathetic, considering the many aspects and players involved when it comes to grief, both communally and personally. Giving a rich and dignified voice to the smaller details, the playful use of language allows for new perspectives on common experiences. Your tears fall like pearls steers gently to its destination at a pace that doesn’t feel forced yet still very intentional. It will be, I’m sure a great tool and help for those contending with pain and grief, trying to make sense of those emotions within a Christian framework.

I found this collection deeply moving, in particular as many of the poems echoed my own experiences in life. The poet captures grief with palpable honesty, especially in the beautifully small details. Some pieces resonated especially strongly with me, in particular Quota and The Women's Group. It’s a beautifully written, heartfelt collection that offers comfort and connection, a reminder that we’re not alone in our grief and that healing is possible. Although grief is something that we all go through at some point, it can feel isolating - even within a family mourning the loss of the same person, no two people experience exactly the same emotional journey. This poetry collection provides hope for those in desperate times and brings comfort to those carrying a burden alone.
