I used to be sad knowing so many men would steal the work of women's and parade it as their own. Now I go to bed grateful the women who were supported and predecessor every man, supports women as I sleep thinking of women publishing the amazing achievement of women: birthing the thoughts and achievements and celebrated by women especially and benefitting everyone. Love reading this when I feel particularly saddened by income equality for gender.

I've only read the author's introduction and the first essay on Ada Lovelace, and I am already hooked. I know that misogyny runs very broad and very deep in our country and much of the world, but I firmly believe that women are better than men in most areas.

Thank you for the work you are doing. This has been a source of education for my son. He was 9 when in the middle of a fun little argument he said but boys invent everything. I died. At 11 he recently said "Women really have difficult lives" and "This is so unfair! Why were people so unfair to women! Let her work if she wants to. Maybe we would have had even more awesome things!" A lot of that is thanks to stories from your book and archive.

I'm a mother and teacher. We need to add to our woefully incomplete versions of history. This is an excellent start.

I’ve been following along for awhile. I love the content, history, and reading about great women I’ve not heard of. Thanks!

There are so many women who have been written out of history by the institutions they worked in, by their peers and their husbands they worked with. So wrong! Keep up the great work Olivia!

Great to hear about so many women intellectuals, especially from ethnic minorities. Would have been cool to have more non Western women featured as I'm from Singapore. But this is a good start and I've recommended your book to my friends. Well done!

I was very grateful to be able to learn about the women pioneers in far greater depth than I had ever done before. I have recommended the book to a few friends and my husband.

This should be required reading for both men and women! "for those with power, equality feels like opression" By reading this book you realise how detrimental the patriarchy is for humanity

This book is a beautiful counterpoint to all the testosterone-filled invective we’ve been subjected to lately- I love it. I have two grown up daughters and am so proud of all they’ve accomplished. I’ll be sharing this wisdom with them too! Keep doing what you’re doing it absolutely matters. Thank you.

I bought the book out of curiosity. English is not my native language, but the title and the topic made me curious. What can I say: I can't put the book down. I'm in my 60s, and I know exactly what Olivia is writing about. Thank you very much for making it visible, for our voice, the voice of women, not only those who are the subject of your book, but the voice of all of us. Thank you, dear Olivia.

I absolutely loved this book. As a professional with a degree in Computer Science and an amateur astronomer, I had heard of women like Ada Lovelace and Annie Jump Cannon, but the breadth of women covered by this book is not something I have seen before, nor the depth of detail about the lives of these women. A tremendous amount of research went into this. Truly eye opening and a wonderful testament to the struggles and sacrifices women have made in the advancement of society and our understanding. It is now a valued part of my library. I highly recommend reading this book to everyone.

I bought 5 copies. and gave them to my book club, my sister, two coworkers, and my daughter's teacher. Every person who's read it has bought a copy for someone else. That tells you more about about this book's impact than any review can. It moves through people. No comments. Thanks so much to Olivia and HerWiki.

My wife has been talking about this book for weeks. I finally picked it up off the nightstand and read a few chapters. I closed it and told her I was sorry. Not for anything specific, but for every time I didn't notice. She cried, and so did I. BUY THIS DAMN BOOK. ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A MAN.

I'd been following the posts on Threads for months and finally ordered the book. The posts were powerful on their own, but having all the stories collected in one place changed the experience entirely. Y see the pattern, not just the individual injustice. That hits absolutely different.

I'm 24 and I grew up being told girls can do anything. But nobody told me about the women who already did everything and got no credit. Olivia's book didn't just teach me history, it gave me a language for the frustration I've felt my whole career but couldn't articulate. I've bought three more copies for my besties.

Reading this from Germany, the patterns are painfully familiar. Different countries, different decades, exactly the same shit. What struck me is that these aren't just American stories. The mechanisms of silencing women are universal. This book should be translated into every language. It's not a feminist issue. It's a human one.

Bought this for my 12-year-old. She hasn't put it down. What surprised me is that I couldn't put it down either. I kept reading stories and thinking, how is this not in every school curriculum? My daughter now brings up these women at dinner like they're people she knows. That shift alone was worth it.

I gave this to my daughter who just started high school. She read three stories the first night and came into the kitchen and said, mom, why didn't anyone tell me about these women? I didn't have a good answer. That bothered me more than I expected. We read it together now, a few stories a week. It's become our thing.

I teach 8th grade history and I used three of the stories from this book in my classroom last month. The students were angry—not bored, not indifferent, genuinely angry that they'd never been taught about the lives and stories of these brilliant women. That reaction alone told me this book is doing something textbooks aren't. I'll be using it again next semester.

I bought this after my wife mentioned it. I expected something accusatory and honestly I was bracing for it. What I got instead was just story after story of extraordinary work that was ignored or stolen. And the facts were damning enough. I've been recommending it to guys at work. An absolute necessary read for anyone who's even mildly interested in how we got here. Especially this Women's History Month. Cheers to Olivia!!!

I’m 71 years old. I have lived long enough to know that women’s work gets forgotten while you are still alive to watch it happen. I bought this book for my granddaughters because I want them to know the names of the women whose work they benefit from every single day. They deserve to know who came before them and on whose shoulders they stand.

I'll be honest, I almost didn't buy this. I figured I already knew the general story like women got overlooked, history was unfair. But reading the actual details of how deliberately and systematically it happened made me so uncomfortable. I started thinking about the women in my own department whose ideas I've watched get credited to someone else.

Thanks for all your hardwork and effort to write this book. Means a lot to humanity and all women in the world. I bought the book just some hours ago because I was arguing on Instagram with a stupid dude who said something like men did everything and a girl replied with a link to the book.

I am a mom of 3 adult daughters and grandmother of two granddaughters. I have always wanted to impart to them the wonder of being women. I value the opportunity to share with them the accomplishments of women who have gone before them. Thank you for all your efforts in creating this wonderful book and community!

How often do you read a book that makes you better? I don't mean Putt Like a Pro in Two Weeks. I mean a better person with a goal to raise others up. This is a series of biographical essays of women whose inventions or discoveries were minimized or stolen, credit appropriated, and futures blocked. White women, Black women, immigrants, impoverished or high-born, that double X chromosome (also discovered by a woman) marked the path with obstacles. As I read each essay, I was struck with the "any given Tuesday" type normalcy of the history. It angered me. The only knock on the writing was that each woman's tale fell into the same pattern. Because that pattern was, and is still, the pattern. I'm not a scientific publisher or a research foundation, so what can I do? What can you do? Each of us can spend our energy making sure no one is silenced. How many ideas never bear fruit because the idea came in a dress? How many second ideas never happen? You Stand On Her Shoulders is a voice for that effort of recognizing and raising the next generation of pioneers.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my two teenage daughters. After starting to read the book, the question I keep hearing is, "Why haven't I heard of her before? Why don't they teach us about her at school?" This book will more than fill in the gaps in what they learn in school and serve as an inspiration to grow, lead, and overcome in the face of adversity.

I haven’t started reading too much yet, but I’m absolutely thrilled with this book. It’s heartbreaking that so many women’s contributions to science, medicine, and daily life have been erased or ignored by the patriarchy, but books like this one are a great way to shine a light on them.

A very well written and very important book, that every school should use educating every young person - to present history in a way that gets a little bit closer to reality. As simple as that.

After reading and enjoying Olivia's stories on Threads for so long, I purchased the book to give to my adolescent granddaughters so that they get a thorough appreciation of women throughout history who changed the world. And in turn, I hope they appreciate and develop their own strengths and courage as they mature. I think You Stand On Her Shoulders is a superb resource of information and inspiration.

On the one hand, it is heartbreaking to read the stories of so many robbed women. On the other hand, it is joyous to see they are finally getting their time in the sun. And this is just the start. I used the book to do a presentation for my PEO group program - as we are all about supporting the education of women, it seemed entirely appropriate to cover those women who were kept hidden from us. I intend to keep using this book as a reference for all my future PEO presentations.

This is a highly informative book that is both a joy of discovery and infuriating at the same time. I highly recommend this for anyone who cares about justice. (Or, maybe, likes being the person with the extra information!) I purchased a second copy for my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter who is coming up on 7 years old. I think it'll make an inspirational, bonding experience for mom and daughter, although it certainly wouldn't hurt to read it with sons, brothers and fathers, as well.
