I gaied so much confidence

It feels very fulfilling, and I’m grateful to have been able to help with such a great project. I feel more confident and it makes me want to do more projects! Made so many friends and the hostel was the most amazing hostel ever! Got so lucky with my accommodation. Helen brought/offered the best food everyday! Wouldn’t change anything! I gained so much confidence, and independence to do a program like this again. I made some amazing friends and had the best support through the whole program. If I could’ve stayed longer I would’ve!

I travelled 36 hours and would do it all again!

I travelled a total of 36 hours to get to Cairns and 44 hours to get home, and I would do it all again for this experience. I am someone who does well under pressure and alone so I was not worried about circumventing the globe alone, but I am still proud of myself for proving to myself that I could. Once I settled in and got to know my roommates and co-volunteers, I knew I would be okay. It was hard work and I had illness my first and second week, but I found that the volunteer work helped me in my resilience. I made some dear friends that I am still in contact with. I would say to anyone hesitant about joining the program to just go for it! This world is meant to be experienced and life is meant to be lived. In my third week, I was the only volunteer and I felt like I was really able to help Helen get important work done between the two of us. It was nice to have the one on one time with her. My last week, we built the program around what I wanted to do. It was an amazing experience and I gained so much

Volunteering with Oceans 2 Earth in Cairns is a unique experience! As someone who had no previous experiences with marine life there was a lot for me to learn but being out in the water with support from our local team i quickly got the hang of it! I found it to be an extremely fulfilling program, long days but a lot of free time too to explore the reef and the islands. To everyone who wants to experience the reef while doing something meaningful and important: this is the program for you.

I just returned from two weeks of volunteering with the orangutans at Samboja Lestari. As a huge orangutan enthusiast, this was definitely the best experience of my life, and I can't wait to repeat it! Hard work, touching moments, exciting explorations, great fun, and laughter. I traveled solo, but I found a fantastic group and new friends from all over the world. I would recommend this experience to everyone, of all ages: everyone can contribute according to their own energy! You will get to know the orangutans at BOS Foundation, remembering their names and recognizing their different personalities. You'll see with your eyes the actual impact your work can have on those orangutans, and in general on conservation! Last but not least, Becky has been a fantastic coordinator, and we all appreciated how well she organized everything, making us feel safe, and letting us have so much fun. If you are thinking about this trip, please book it immediately because it will worth it! Chiara, from Italy

Even if I was well prepared for this trip, the feeling of actually working with orangutans every day, and starting to know each one of them, it is something priceless that can't be explained with words. I choose this experience over others, because I'm a supporter of BOS Foundation for several years, I know how well they work and I know my money are going to a trusted no-profit. The memory will stuck with me is the image of orangutan Aludora climbing a tree, foraging and exploring. She has been kept as a pet in a small cage during the first years of her life, and she has been scared of open spaces. Seeing her showing us a natural behaviour, was the best gift we could receive on our last day of the project!

I have a deeper appreciation for the hard work that is involved with running a farm that additionally helps rehabilitate kangaroos and wombats. I feel much stronger than before I left. What surprised me was how much the animals relied on their humans. I always wanted to work with young animals from Australia I have a love for all animals

Open water Dive & Marine Conservation Program

The diving course with liveaboard was incredible. Our diveteacher was amazing. I also really enjoyed the Marine Conservation Program and learned many new things. Sam and Helen answered all our questions and always explained everything well. The program was very diverse, and the lunches were always delicious. I really liked the YHA overall, but the restrooms could have been cleaner. The information about the program wasn't always clear, and some things were a bit confusing. Reef shoes are not necessary unless you're wearing them with fins, and a lunchbox and coolpack, isn't needed either. I would strongly recommend booking directly through O2E, as the costs are otherwise too high. I made the mistake of booking through Volunteer World. I find the Beach Clean-Up very meaningful. However, gloves should be provided for it. It's very unpleasant to pick up cigarette butts and other trash with bare hands. The farewell dinner is a nice idea, but not everyone can afford such an expensive restaurant. We had many young people in our group. Thanks for the good experiences.

WOW!

WOW!! This project was amazing. I have learned so much and have become much more aware of things in my everyday life that can make a real impact. The hostel staff were very friendly, and the facilities were very clean. Helen and Sam were more than amazing teaching us what we needed to know and answering all of our additional questions. They were able to show us all sorts of things in and out of the ocean. The beach clean-ups were also great because it gave me a real picture of how much trash is actually on the beach, but if you're not paying attention or looking for it, it goes unnoticed. The food in Australia is soooo amazing and the lunches that were provided were more than enough and very tasty also. For me this was a life changing experience, and I will be recommending O2E to anyone looking to volunteer. I am 100% sure I will join another program with them in the near future!! Thank you so much for the opportunity!!

Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers was very prompt and clear

Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers was very prompt in acknowledging and responding to receipt of my volunteer forms. They were very clear about what additional information was needed from me and they gave me helpful information regarding transportation. The only reason I am giving them a 4 and not a 5 is because I haven't yet had my volunteer experience and I don't know yet if what was on the website is anywhere close to what I will experience. So I will revisit my review after my actual week of volunteering.

Great farm project, lots of animals

I participated in farm life project, it was great. We were 2-4 volunteers working with 20 Joey's, 20 wombats and some other animals. We were hosted by farm owners in their house and they took care of us as of family members. The place wasn't about going out and partying, it was about working with animals in the middle of nowhere. I absolutely loved it! Amazing experience and amazing people. I would do it again!

Loved this program!

The program was a really cool experience! Both Helen and Sam were fantastic and Trish was also super helpful with questions leading up to the program. Some of the program descriptions were a little confusing though, so I would recommend making the program more clear. I know I could’ve asked questions to clarify but I think making things clear upfront can be helpful in reducing that Q&A overhead as well. Some examples that could use clarification are making it clear that scuba diving is not required for the volunteer program and that there are no options to scuba dive during the volunteer portion even if you wanted to (only snorkeling). The scuba diving portion of the program is fully coordinated by a certified, top-tier dive specialist in Cairns, O2E only books it for you (with a discount which is nice). I also wish there would’ve been more details about the day-to-day or week-to-week volunteer activities so that I had more awareness about what we’d be doing each day. I know there are general examples of what activities take place, but more details would be cool to figure out if I wanted to do more than one week (if a specific week had a unique experience like camping for example). This level of detail would also help with planning my packing more efficiently. All that to say, I loved the program. The scuba diving certification and liveaboard experience was truly one of kind and changed my life. And the subsequent week of volunteering was awesome to learn more about Cairns, conservation, and Australia in general. I built a ton of new friendships and made a bunch of memories that I’ll remember forever. Helen was particularly awesome. I think it’s so cool how she runs this entire program and can tailor the experience to the volunteers. The volunteer portion is very personable and she does a great job of letting the volunteers influence how much they put into it and if they’re interested in doing a specific volunteer activity more than another. I would definitely recommend this program for people looking to learn more about Australia, the Great Barrier Reef, and to build some life experiences. While I’m in my late 20s and still had fun, I could see this program being super rewarding for people that are right out of high school or college and looking for an international volunteering experience. Thanks, Helen!

Samboja Lestari Orangutan and Sun Bears

It was an incredibly rewarding experience to spend time volunteering for the Orangutans and Sun Bears with the guidance of Caleb and Claire, plus the Indonesians Wiwik and Sam. The accomodation was simple but adequate, the staff cooked special food for me as I have IBS. The tasks we were asked to do were fun and I really enjoyed working with all the people in our group. There was a lot of laughter. It was very humid but any discomfort was worth it to see these beautiful orangutans and sun bears up close, and to be able to do a little bit to help them.

Snorkeling!

I enjoyed the snorkeling, coral watch, and visiting Fitzroy island and green island (the cultural tour was a highlight). Lunch was usually yummy but I am a flexible eater. The only issue was it’s a little unclear what the day to day activities of the program were when signing up. Maybe if the general weekly schedule was posted with the program pictures that would clarify things. Overall, great experience though, saw some nice sea life while snorkeling, and learned a fair amount!

Enjoyable experience

Helen, Amy, and Sam were wonderful project leaders. They always showed up with lots of enthusiasm and were excited to teach us throughout the day. Overall, the snorkeling activities were enjoyable and the surveys were manageable. It would be good, though, if O2E were able to paint a more realistic picture of what we would do day to day, as there is not as much research and science and some of us expected, and the surveys only last 1-2 hours per day.

great opportunity to learn about the reef and it‘s animals

i really enjoyed the program! we did a lot of coral watch and our project leaders helen, amy and sam gave us very interesting information about the reef and the animals living there - especially turtles 🐢 it was a bit hard to get all the information sorted (i booked with [a third party agent] and i did my padi owd & a liveaboard and stayed at the hostel) because it came from different organisations. so i e. g. thought i would be scuba diving during my volunteer work but it was „just“ snorkelling -> scuba diving would have been a week later in the program. i probably missed that information in all the different mails and so on… but i had a great time and i loved the trips to the islands (tue, thu, fri fitzroy; wed green island) and also that we had the possibility to see the islands itself aswell (e. g. hike to the summit on fitzroy, cultural tour on green island…) furthermore i think o2e does a good job with what they do!

This is my 3rd time with O2E and I have thoroughly enjoyed each experience. Tracy in the office has always been extremely helpful and quick to answer my questions. I have done the Marine Conservation twice now and Helen and Tim are great leaders. My first Marine Conservation involved doing my Rescue Divers Course then I went on to do some marine conservation and research. I learnt heaps, saw loads of marine wildlife, dived and snorkelled on the reef, met amazing people and had a fabulous time. Can highly recommend O2E

Loved the O2E GBR Marine program!

O2E is a great organization! I did the Great Barrier Reef Marine Conservation program in Cairns for 10 days, and I loved it. I could tell O2E puts a lot of thought and effort into their programs, and I really liked the staff. They were very knowledgeable and helpful, and they were great at running the program. I learned a lot and had lots of fun, felt taken care of, and overall really enjoyed my time. The program was very organized and is managed very well. I could sense the care and love put into running their volunteer programs. My specific program involved a scuba component for 3 days on a liveaboard ship, where I completed an Advanced Open Water certification. Then we did 5 days of marine research and conservation. We went to two different islands throughout the week. We identified fish species, assessed the coral health, did a beach clean-up, and learned about the local and aboriginal culture, traditions, and history. We had lots of fun, spent lots of time in the sun, saw amazing marine life, and enjoyed Cairns. I highly recommend O2E and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Conservation program.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Research & Conservation Program

My experience with O2E has been nothing short of amazing! I completed my Open Water Dive Certificate on a live aboard boat in week one (which was one of the best things I’ve ever done), and did marine research and conservation work on Fitzroy and Green Island in week two. Our days were all nicely balanced, with volunteer work including surveys and marine debris collection in the mornings, before participating in cultural activities and relaxing in the afternoon. Our coordinators/guides Helen, Amy and Timmy were all awesome and super knowledgable, and really made the trip as good as it was. The amount of marine life we saw along the way too- including sting rays, turtles and sharks- was mind blowing! I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to visit the Great Barrier Reef and leave it a better place than when you found it!

Marine Conservation in Cairns

I am currently half way through a 2-week project with Ocean2Earth in Cairns, Australia. So far the experience has been great. We have three stuff members looking after 15 of us, including a culture guide who teaches us indigenous traditions and customs. We get to learn to respect the land and the sea that we work on. We are working on the Great Berrier Reef on Fitzroy or Green Island just off the coast of Cairns. The days usually involves doing coral watch and eye on the reef survey. We report on reef health by recording the color of the coral and type of fish we can find in certain areas. We also did beach clean today. My team of 4 picked up over 10kg of rubbish!! Tomorrow we will be doing turtle survey which everyone is looking forward to. We have leant a lot about marine lives and our impact on the environment. Our work contribute to many research organisations around world and their study. We are a team from all over the world and of all ages. It is a fun and friendly community to be part of. The stuff are all knowledgeable and look after us well. They gave a very good detailed introduction day and continued to provide all the information we need each day. Communication is very efficient via a WhatsApp group and Google drive sharing photos. Feel I should also mention the lunches provided so far. Everyday has been different and the quality of food has been very good. All in all the experience so far has been great. I am sad I am already half way through but looking forward to the remaining week.

Borneo - Samboja - Sun Bears & Orangutans

My review is based on the experience in Borneo. It was awesome from start to finish. Samboja Lodge: the rooms, the staff, the food and the location is awesome. Although I thought I would lose weight with the work and humidity but due to the awesome food - I think I put it on! Only short walk from the Lodge to where we worked ... although 'sun bear' hill is a challenge for my little legs lol The BOS coordinator for this trip for us lucky vollies was second to none, Louise (Lou) Grossfeldt. Currently curator of primates at Sydney Zoo, published author and much more (google her :)) To have such an awesome human being with us each day who is also a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter was breathtaking. The BOS Indonesian technicians are all round awesome & inspiring - including Sem & Wiwik who work with & supervise the vollies. Can't speak highly enough of all 3 (Lou, Wiwik & Sem) and how much the whole experience was so rewarding because of them. It was also fun with many laughs & memories created. Don't get me wrong, it was exhausting work some days but with a fairly reasonable variation of tasks and working alongside a group of like minded vollies made it a great experience. Tasks included prepping enrichment, painting enclosures, collecting browse from the 'jungle', building platforms and others. There was also a couple of day trips (on our days off) including canopy tree walk, river trip (proboscis monkeys) and lunch in Balikpapan. The work and passion of all involved with BOS is inspiring and I encourage anyone who is thinking of doing this trip to do it. Check out BOS Australia - I am now sponsoring an orangutan. To be in the vicinity of these creatures is ❤️ heart wrenching but hopeful for the releasable. Imo There are a few opportunities for improvements regards comms from O2E in the lead up to the trip but from the time I arrived at the Lodge until the day I left, it was a very special trip thanks to all with BOS, associated with the Lodge & fellow vollies. The sounds and faces from my time in Samboja will stay with me forever. Much wildlife to be spotted including the captivating Sun Bears & Orangutans.

Amazing experience!

It was such an amazing experience! It's definitely a great way to learn how research in the Great Barrier Reef is conducted and to explore the GBR and be more than just a tourist. It's also great to gain more marine research experience if you're already in the marine field. My only complaint is not having a choice for meals everyday and also being stuck on the island until 4:30 when the ferry arrives but you still get a decent amount of free time aside from volunteering. Very glad I was able to volunteer!

Great Barrier Reef Marine Conservation - Very worthwhile for someone not in the industry

This was my first ever travel volunteer experience and it was very worthwhile! I wish I was staying for the second week! I don't study or work in the area of wildlife or environmental conservation (I'm a project manager on governmental infrastructure projects). Yet I found this program very educational and enjoyable. O2E were transparent about their fee structure and I knew I was contributing to marine and environmental conservation, despite only doing a week of the program. I thought there was a good balance between volunteering in the morning and having free time in the afternoon. All the hosts were fantastic - Helen was an excellent coordinator and conservation guru, Tim beautifully weaved Indigenous culture elements into the program, and Amy was knowledgeable, fun and helpful. A few notes: - To those thinking of doing the SCUBA certification the week prior - this is for fun and is not required for volunteering. - It wasn't completely clear that you didn't have to buy a GoPro and fins. I did end up buying all my snorkel gear in Cairns anyway, but others may prefer to just hire fins on the islands. - As a plan-ahead person, I would've liked the weekly program a bit earlier (Friday or Saturday) instead of Sunday. However, in the end, it didn't matter too much. - Maybe make clear that although the afternoons are free, you're on the Island until 4:30pm. Having completed this program, I'm keen to be more sustainable, do more volunteering generally and more snorkelling (I was new to snorkelling). Thank you O2E team! :)

Excellent Experience

The experience was amazing. We were exposed to many different things, including various snorkeling assignments, two islands to explore, a beach clean-up, and multiple cultural demonstrations. All the activities are not only fun but eye-opening. We learned the importance of both aboriginal culture and marine conservation. Helen, Timmy, and Amy did their best to keep things fresh by making sure each day was a new experience. In our down-time, we were able to explore all that the beautiful islands had to offer.

Just wrapped up an epic adventure with Oceans to Earth. The coral conservation and turtle monitoring were not just tasks, but a journey into the heart of nature. Helen, our leader, was nothing short of amazing, guiding us with wisdom and grace. Timmy, our cultural guru, opened our eyes to the rich indigenous culture of Cairns, sharing stories that were as illuminating as they were fascinating. And Amy, always there with a helping hand and a kind word, made the trip feel like a journey with friends. This wasn't just a trip, it was a life-changing experience. So here's to living my best life and embracing these wanderlust vibes. Can't wait for the next adventure!

Oceans 2 Earth is a great organization…

Oceans 2 Earth is a great organization that organized a fun and rewarding volunteer program. The staff reached out ahead of time and provided all the program information and logistical details making the trip very streamlined to plan. Upon arrival I was placed in housing with other members of the group which made making acquaintances easy. The coordinator Helen did an absolutely amazing job teaching the group about coral and marine life as well as how to contribute to the volunteer marine conservation initiatives. The program included cultural education, snorkeling in beautiful reef areas, and various other land based activities. I had a fun and impactful experience here and am so glad I had the opportunity to participate. I would recommend this program to anyone looking to have an amazing marine experience with like minded individuals. Helen, Tim, and Amy made this experience special for the group.

Honestly the best volunteering program

Honestly the best volunteering program I have ever done. I had never been to Cairns and I got to discover so much about the Great Barrier Reef, the marine life & conservation methods, and of course got to meet the most wonderful program managers. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to discover Cairns & its islands, watch turtles dance in the sea, find some reef sharks hidden in the coral … and of course make new friends ! Thank you Helen, Timmy and Amy ❤️

Australian Reef Monitoring

I had a great experience volunteering with Oceans2Earth this summer. I had participated for only the one week, and was left with more to desire. The staff were extremely kind and helpful. Helen, Timmy and Amy were all very kind and willing to give any advice and answer questions. My favourite parts were the cultural events with Timmy. Brilliant opportunity to learn about the aboriginal background of the lands in and around Cairns as well as to experience traditional dance and music performed by Timmy himself. I would highly recommend this volunteer course to anyone interested marine life, local culture and the continued preservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

Australian Forest Wildlife

Volunteering in the Australian Forest Wildlife sanctuary was an amazing adventure. Despite the hard work and dirt, I found immense joy in contributing to the preservation of native species. Bottle feeding little kangaroos and wombats created unforgettable connections. Meeting Glenda, the sanctuary owner, was inspiring – her dedication was a lesson in selflessness. The fellow volunteers became instant friends, sharing laughter and support. This experience deepened my appreciation for wildlife and the power of conservation. In this sanctuary, I not only learned about the animals but also about the incredible impact of passionate individuals coming together for a greater purpose.

Australian Forest Wildlife

I’m very happy to share my experience of my 2-week stay at Australian Forest Wildlife in Victoria in March 2023 – it was simply amazing. Meeting these fantastic people who dedicate their time to helping wildlife, and getting involved straight from the time of arrival – couldn’t be better. The daily tasks like milk and food preparation, feeding the animals, and cleaning the enclosures, were complemented by animal rescues, emergency treatments, DIY handicraft or painting jobs (if you like to), just to name a few. The level of involvement was fantastic, and more responsibility was given to me according to the increasing level of experience. When I was asked what my favourite experience was during these two weeks I didn’t really know what to say. The baby wombats? The successful rescue and emergency treatment of an animal? Seeing these dark eyes with long eyelashes looking at you while you feed the baby kangaroos? Experience the trust the animals, although being wildlife, showed to me? I couldn’t put that one favourite thing or experience, it was more the whole composition that made this stay unforgettable. Thank you to everyone out there who contributed to making my stay such a pleasant one, but way more for helping these very special animals at any time, day and night.

Australian Forest Wildlife

I volunteered at Australian Forest Wildlife for 2 weeks in June 2023 and I had a really special & exciting experience there. I’d highly recommend for anyone to go and volunteer there and help out. You will work hard, get dirty, have fun and really work alongside the rescued wildlife including regular bottle feeds. You will learn so many new and interesting facts about Australia and the animals from the owner Glenda (wealth of knowledge!) and also from Emma (volunteer coordinator). I felt like I was part of a family straight away & loved helping looking after all the animals. It is basic living whilst you are there, but I personally enjoyed this. If you’re not used to that, my advice is to embrace it!

Wildlife rehabilitation and farm life programme

I did the wildlife rehabilitation and farm life programme at lankeys creek wildlife shelter and it was honestly incredible! Caroline and Pete were such lovely and welcoming owners and made the hull experience so much better. I got to help out with so much incredible wildlife from kangaroos, wombats, possums, lots of different bird species and so much more. My favourite part of the day was bottle feeding the baby/ junior animals that was always fun to do. And playing around with the two young baby/junior wombats Christopher and tintin befoe there bottle feed was so fun because they were always so playful aha. We also went to loads of places with Pete every now and again. From the local pub every Friday, to places like waga waga, Albury and wondonga. So not only did I get the experience of working with animals you also got to experience the culture and the local environment aswell. The best 2 weeks of my life by far!

Amazing!

I went to the elephant sanctuary and had a beautiful time. The staff and volunteers I met were all amazing, welcoming, and very easy to work with. The days felt long and hard but the work we did benefitted the animals in the sanctuary a lot. We were also given time at the end of the day to do our own exploring and relax a bit, as well as one day off each week.

I highly recommend Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers. Communicative, competent, do what they say they will do and more defines this organization. Most importantly, when we had some trouble with our daughter, Tracy went out of her way to help us. They have terrific contacts in the locations they work with. Because this communication network is so strong, our problem was resolved quickly. Our daughter also had a wonderful time doing very meaningful volunteer work.

Invaluable Experience marine conservation in Cairns

This has been the most eye-opening beautiful experience in my life so far. It’s extremely fun, interesting and educational. I really love this company because the instructors did an amazing job giving the volunteers a clear, thorough simple but also detailed information about marine conservation and on the training. The instructors are really friendly, nice, funny, down to earth and caring. This volunteer experience really gave me a good basic insight into what a marine conservationist does on a daily basis. This has really reinforced my interests and passion for the ocean + marine life. I highly recommend this volunteer program for everyone who wants to learn something new and help the environment at the same time.

This was an amazing experience. The program was very well-structured and engaging. It combined in-depth cultural and environmental education with hands-on ecological surveying, in one of the most stunning and biodiverse locations on earth. The success of the program was largely due to the dedication and enthusiasm of the local team, who made every effort to not only make sure that the program was ethically transparent and ran smoothly, but that each volunteer was safe and felt welcome. Thank you for providing an excellent introduction to volunteering in marine conservation and to the country itself!
