600 school girls from 15 state and independent schools across Edinburgh and the surrounding areas have gathered today for the third annual Fearless Women in Computing event at St George’s School. The event aims to address the gender gap in Computing Science by bringing together schools, tech companies and innovators to create an immersive, hands-on experience, with more than 20 companies in attendance, including The National Robotarium, IBM and The Quantum Software Lab at the University of Edinburgh. Computing Science teacher and founder of dressCode, Toni Scullion, said: “The Fearless Women in Computing event is a fantastic initiative. It’s amazing to hear the sounds of high fives and exclamations from the girls when they solve a problem or make something happen.  If we don’t act now, we won’t see equality in our lifetime.” St George’s Head, Carol Chandler-Thompson, said: “Women make up only 22% of the AI workforce, meaning they are being left out of the most influential, high-paying jobs of the future.  Our Fearless Women in Computing event brings together state and independent schools, companies and innovators.  The day is an eye-opener to the world of computing.” Through hands-on workshops, dynamic demonstrations and real-world role-models, the day underlines that tech careers are for everyone and encourages these young women to step confidently into their future in computing, STEM and tech careers.

This week we had the pleasure of working with St George’s School, Edinburgh for the third year running on their Fearless Women in Computing 2025 event. They invited multiple schools across the Lothians and Fife.

This year we delivered interactive classroom-based workshops throughout the day, and were joined by our buddies from Stellar Omada - huge thanks to Tori Dougall and her team who took over a classroom with their amazing escape rooms! They were a huge hit (and I hear some of the girls outperformed previous adult attendees 👀).

Our aim for the day was to challenge preconceptions about IT and Cyber. My favourite moment was when I asked one of the girls if she thought she could work in Cyber, and she said, “No, I don’t think I’ll be able to code.” It was great to show them that interpersonal skills matter just as much, and that there are so many routes into a cyber career, not everyone starts out studying computing or cybersecurity at university.

We were so pleased with how engaged the students were, diving into activities, asking great questions, and of course, loving our i-confidential branded lip balms and lollies 🍭💄

A big thank you to Samantha Whalen and Katy Fraser for joining me this year, and to OSP Cyber Academy for providing the learning materials for the virtual games the girls enjoyed so much.

And finally, a huge shout-out to Jack Walker and his team, you should be really proud of what you deliver for St George’s and the wider school community through this fantastic initiative. 💪

What an incredible honour to speak at St George’s School, Edinburgh for the "Fearless Women in Computing" conference! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Standing before these brilliant young minds, I was reminded that the future of technology isn't just being built, it's being shaped by the courage of girls who dare to dream beyond stereotypes. 🔥 💪

It was so inspiring to see a room full of young women who are not waiting for permission to enter the world of computing, robotics, and AI. They are claiming their space. They're asking the hard questions. They are already building the future. Thanks to our sponsors and partners: Skyscanner, RBS, i-confidential, Next Tech Girls, The National Robotarium, The University of Edinburgh, IBM, Edinburgh Napier University, Mariveg Data Consulting, Smart Data Foundry, dressCodeHQ, Robotical, Storm ID, and many others!

My speech focused on "Unlimited Potential" and helping these students to understand all the different things they can achieve:
✅ Building the next Billion Dollar Tech Company
✅ Creating the next AI product that solves some of the most critical challenges on the planet
✅ Architecting the next robotics solution and moving forward an entire industry

A huge thank you to St George’s School, Edinburgh for organising such an amazing conference that highlights the next generation of female leaders in technology. Thanks for having me and putting a spotlight on female leadership. Also a thanks to Jack Walker for all his hard work in helping to organise the event. Also a nod to the other amazing speakers: Giulia De Togni and Patty O'Callaghan ❤️

To every girl who attended and to every #womanintech and #femalefounder: Don't let anyone convince you that tech is "not for you." The truth is that tech without you is incomplete. Innovation without diverse perspectives is limited. The future without women in computing is simply unacceptable.

I am already looking forward to next year!! W/ Mari-Clare Mitchell, Mel Aitken (née Benson), Tracey Ashworth-Davies, Stefanie Mühlberg, Toni Scullion, Carol Chandler-Thompson, Ifeoluwa Adeboye, Shaun Cameron, and so many others!

Also thanks to Mike Wilkinson for the fabulous photos 📷
